The bond sell-off that started last week has accelerated. Brent crude has jumped sharply as hopes for a US-Iran agreement fade, and the 10-year Treasury yield has broken through 5.2%. UK diesel prices have hit an all-time high as a direct consequence. That’s a stagflationary backdrop landing just as Healey is trying to frame next month’s budget.
On the budget itself, the Chancellor used his Labour conference speech to make a virtue of fiscal discipline. He argued there is “nothing progressive” about losing control of the public finances, and explicitly flagged the challenging global backdrop as a constraint on what October’s statement can deliver. With borrowing costs at record highs and the welfare bill rising, the message to the party was: don’t expect much. Burnham’s Labour, having replaced Starmer, is finding that the political bounce doesn’t change the arithmetic.
The RAF Fairford arrests are worth watching. Five British nationals in their 20s, all from London, were detained on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offences at the US air force base in Gloucestershire. The Economist is reporting the foiled plot may have had Iranian direction, which would connect directly to the US-Iran tensions driving the oil move. Counter-terrorism police have secured an extension to hold the men.
Nvidia has announced a $150bn share buyback — the largest in the chipmaker’s history. It comes as share price gains have slowed this year, and reads partly as a signal of confidence in its own cash generation at a moment when the AI capex cycle is under scrutiny. Separately, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei is meeting President Trump for the first time one-on-one, which is notable given Anthropic’s positioning as the more safety-conscious frontier lab. It suggests the administration is broadening its AI engagement beyond the established OpenAI relationship.
The 48-hour calendar item to watch: the UK budget is not until later in October, but Healey is likely to face further press scrutiny on the fiscal rules this week following his conference remarks. More immediately, Fed governor Warsh is scheduled to speak — given the Treasury yield move, his tone on rates will matter to gilt markets.
